How Can I Know

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

This is often a question in the heart and mind of many people. God’s Word has the answers. We can know whether or not we have truly received Jesus as our own Savior and are saved and have everlasting life.

When a person truly repents of his sins (Acts 3:19) and receives the Lord Jesus as his own personal Savior — a personal Substitute for sin — God gives the wonderful gift of everlasting life. (Repent means we quit going our own way and will to follow the Lord Jesus. It is a choice.)

Ephesians 2:8-9 says we are saved “by grace through faith, and that not of ourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works.” Titus 3:5 also reminds us it is “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy he saved us.” That is such good news!

Since it is a gift — it must be received to be our own. John 1:12 tells us “as many as received him (Jesus), to them gave He power (the right) to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.”

In John 5:24 Jesus says, “He that hears my Word and believes in Him that sent me has everlasting life.” (“Has” means you have it now.) Jesus continues, “and shall not come into judgment, (that is judgment for sin) but has passed from death into life.” What a wonderful promise!

Have you heard God’s Word, believed, and received Jesus as your own personal Savior? God keeps His Word. The moment you believed and received Jesus, you became a child of God by the new birth and God wants you to have wonderful assurance of this.

In 1 John 5:11-13 we read that God has given eternal life (a gift) to the one who has His Son (Jesus). This life is in His Son. He has written these things to those who believe on the name of the Son of God, that we may know that we have (here and now) eternal life. Also read John 10:28-29.

Look up all these verses in your Bible and believe what God says. We know from experience the enemy, the devil, will try to deceive you and try to get you to doubt God’s Word. Or, he may discourage you and get you to neglect reading God’s Word. Remember, the devil is a liar (John 8:44) and is out to destroy whoever he can (1 Peter 5:8-9). You can resist him and cause him to flee (run) (James 4:7). When doubts start to come, turn to God’s Word and affirm that — “Since God said it! That settles it!” Therefore I can believe it to be true. Never go by how you feel. Feelings come and go with circumstances and cannot be trusted. But God’s Word is truth (John 17:17), and we can believe it. God wants you to have wonderful assurance so you can serve Him wholeheartedly. Yes! You can have assurance of salvation! God said so!
